Resistance: Everything You Need To Know

So much success and goal achievement are based on good habits. And good habits are frequently based on discipline, self-control, and the removal of undesirable behaviors.

However, developing healthy habits and establishing self-control is easier said than done. It will take you a lot of physical and mental discipline to better yourself.

If you are suffering resistance, you will be unable to complete your tasks. It serves as an excuse for why you should be doing something other than the task you're avoiding.
What is Resistance?
Resistance to change is a psychological reaction. It's similar to a self-protection system where you reject or battle against your intended behavior improvement. Resistance implies that, despite being highly driven and having the best intentions, you oppose change psychologically.

To complicate matters further, you may be unaware of resistance since it occurs subconsciously. Many people see resistance as an internal conflict between two aspects of themselves: one that openly wants to change and one that secretly opposes it. This covert resistance might have the appearance of an inner rebel.

Resistance may be a physiological reaction as well. Because the transformation process demands extra work, energy, and cognitive capacity, resistance can cause physical pain, such as weariness, lethargy, and slower movement patterns.

When Does Resistance Occur?
When you begin a new endeavor that requires effort and motivation, you will meet resistance. The tasks that generate the most resistance are frequently the most vital to your progress.

Resistance is not limited to personal endeavors. Additionally, it may frequently lead to judgment and criticism of others. Rather than confronting your vulnerabilities, you focus on the apparent flaws of others.

Other people's criticism or animosity toward your ideas might also cause resistance. Instead of being compelled to prove yourself to others, you will abandon your unsupported plans.

What Factors Contribute to Resistance?
Fear is the leading reason. It may manifest itself in plenty of ways. You may be afraid of failure and frightened that others will judge you if you fail. Additionally, you may be afraid of change and unable to let go of the labels with which you identify or the constraints you impose on yourself.

Your negative self-talk also plays a huge part. What’s more, you may argue that you lack the necessary skills to succeed and that no one will listen to what you have to say.

5 Steps to Overcoming Resistance
It could take a lot of work for you to change for the better. However, you should not become overwhelmed by the changes.

Instead, try to take things slowly at first. Here are some steps you could follow:
  1. Note the different sorts of resistance you've encountered in the past.
  2. Plan for obstacles to your desired transformation and prepare for them.
  3. Make a list of the advantages of change and the negatives of not changing.
  4. Determine who your support network will be before you begin.
  5. Reflect and evaluate often.

Final Words
It is only natural to be resistant to change. Regardless of how beneficial your planned change is, you're likely to feel it to some degree when attempting to change. Recognizing resistance and understanding why it occurs allows you to focus on making good long-term changes persist.
